Trekking Routes

Marangu Route

The Marangu Route is the only trail with hut accommodation, making it popular among trekkers who prefer more comfort. It is one of the shorter routes but requires good acclimatization. The path is steady and scenic, passing through rainforest and moorland zones.

Machame Route

The Machame Route is known for its beautiful scenery and higher success rate. It is more challenging than Marangu, with steeper climbs and longer trekking days, but offers great acclimatization through its “climb high, sleep low” profile.

Lemosho is considered one of the most beautiful and less crowded routes on the mountain. It begins from the western side and crosses the Shira Plateau before joining Machame Route. The gradual ascent gives climbers an excellent chance of reaching the summit.

Rongai Route

Beginning from Kilimanjaro’s northern side near the Kenyan border, Rongai is dry and less crowded. It is an excellent option during the rainy season and offers gentle slopes and diverse landscapes.

Shira Route

Shira begins at a high elevation on the western side, crossing the Shira Plateau before merging with the Machame Route. Because the starting point is already high, climbers must be comfortable with quick altitude gain.

Umbwe is the steepest and most demanding route. It is very direct and suitable only for experienced climbers. Though challenging, it joins the Machame Route later on and offers dramatic scenery.
